Money Mail’s 50th Anniversary

50 Years campaigning for our readers

Money Mail, Britain’s oldest national newspaper personal finance section, celebrated its 50th anniversary today.

It was a ground-breaking experiment when it was launched by the Daily Mail in 1966 as a two-page focus on savings, mortgages, pensions, investing and insurance.

Immediately popular with readers for its down-to-earth focus on making everyday money matters easy to understand, it spawned variations at other national newspapers – all of which now have their own personal finance sections.

Money Mail has become known for its campaigning style that champions the concerns of its readers. It has long track record of fighting the consumer’s corner, prompting big businesses to review and improve their policies and practices.

Its campaigns have won major government reforms to women’s pensions, endowment mortgages, bank charges, final salary pensions and children’s savings. More recently its efforts helped win the pension freedoms, a cap on investment fees and a U-turn on a tax raid on retirement funds.

Dan Hyde, the current Money Mail editor, said: ‘To reach the golden 50th anniversary and have retained so much of the original Money Mail character over the years is a testament to its huge popularity among the Daily Mail’s 1.5 million readers.

The original five main pillars of our coverage – savings, mortgages, pensions, investments and insurance – remain today. But enormous social change over the past 50 years has also led us to widen our focus to energy provision, holidays, mobile and internet services, cybercrime and now privacy and the fin-tech boom. ‘The size of our weekly postbag never ceases to amaze me – and that idea of a dialogue with readers has been the lifeblood of the section throughout. ‘With a major pensions revolutions now almost an annual event, record low interest rates, a housing crisis on our hands and the global economy still delicate after the 2008 crash, our readers know there has never been a more important time to stay on top of your personal finances.

Today the Daily Mail published a 50 year anniversary bumper issue of Money Mail, to celebrate the landmark achievement.

The issue included features on how our financial lives have changed over the years, dozens of brilliant money saving tips – and what to expect for your money in the next 50 years.
